Who are our volunteers?
At the Mayborn Museum, volunteers are never just free labor! You are a special guest literally donating your knowledge, skills, and time. Volunteering with us should feel meaningful and fun. We love working with volunteers to help them thrive in roles that fit them best, add a unique value to our museum, and hopefully become our ambassadors to the community.
Our volunteers are:
- Adults – anyone over 18 years of age who is not a Baylor employee or student and is excited to share their knowledge and serve their community.
- College students – Baylor students looking to serve the community and gain experience volunteering in a museum.
- Teens – 9th-11th grade volunteers who are part of our Teen Team program.
- Mayborn Research Partners - Baylor faculty, staff, and students who share their research with our museum visitors.
Listed below are just a few of the ways you can get involved at the Mayborn!
- Spark Cart Engagement: Spark Carts are portable and fun hands-on kits that allow volunteers to teach our museum audience about STEM, history, and humanities concepts. Grab a Spark Cart and teach about identifying poison ivy, dinosaur trace fossils, black bears of Texas, and much more!
- Greeter: Volunteers in this role introduce guests to the Mayborn Museum and offer wayfinding resources, exhibit information, and assist guests with other questions as needed. Greeters are that first friendly face welcoming guests into the museum.
- Interpreter: Interpreters are our experienced volunteers who share their specialized knowledge with museum visitors in the galleries. We work one-on-one with each interpreter to create personalized educational content that aligns with museum exhibits.
- Museum Engagement Programs: Volunteers help staff to facilitate programs like Village Wednesdays, Mini Mondays, and Design Den. This opportunity is a great way to partner with museum staff for fun educational experiences.
- Special Events: Our volunteers frequently help in various ways at our special events like Christmas Lights, Sic ‘em Science, Galas, and Donor events. Volunteering for our special events is a great way to get involved and be a part of a larger group of volunteers and staff working together.
How do I become a volunteer?
Do I need to have prior experience first?
- Good news! There is no museum or education experience required—we teach everything you need to know!
- First, reach out to Kaleigh Reid at Kaleigh_Reid@baylor.edu to express your interest in volunteering! She will schedule a phone call with you to provide more info and answer any questions you may have.
- Then you will attend an in-person volunteer orientation and receive the necessary information and training for on-the-floor engagement.
- All Mayborn Museum Volunteers are required to: undergo a background check, fill out a volunteer release form, and attend engagement trainings.
- After training and paperwork are completed, you are now part of our volunteer team!
